THUNDER BAY – At 4:50 PM Thunder Bay Fire Rescue Service received an alarm from the smoke detection system at the Thunder Bay District Jail.

Thunder Bay Fire Rescue dispatched two pumpers and a pumper rescue were dispatched to the facility.

Pumper 5 was the first responding unit to arrive. The officer was informed by jail staff that a small fire in a small container had been discovered and extinguished by staff in the cells area.

While Fire crews were still on scene the alarm activated again. Jail staff again located and extinguished a small fire in a small container in a different area of the cells. Fire crews cleared the affected area of hazardous smoke and toxins utilizing postive pressure fans.

Once the area was safe for occupation fire crews left the scene leaving the building in the care of jail staff.

The Thunder Bay District Jail was the scene of a recent riot incident and has come under serious discussion to have a new facility replace the aging structure.
