THUNDER BAY – The Ontario Provincial Police have shifted their investigation into an assault on a teenager from Kitchenuhmaykoosib Inninuwug (Big Trout Lake) to a homicide investigation

Joshua Nanokeesic, a sixteen-year-old male who was assaulted in the community in April died in hospital on May 11th, police state.

Nanokeesic had been flown out of Kitchenuhmaykoosib Inninuwug for medical care on April 24th following an incident in the community. Ontario Provincial Police were called to a home in KI on April 24.

Three teenagers from the Kitchenuhmaykoosib Inninuwug First Nation, aged seventeen, eighteen, and nineteen were charged on April 25 with aggravated assault in relation to the incident.

A post mortem was completed on May 14th. The OPP have since issued a media statement which reports that the incident is now being investigated as a homicide.

The OPP have not said whether the charges against the teens will be changed.
