Ultimate Gymnastics Continue Impressive Run At Provincial Qualifiers

THUNDER BAY – SPORTS – The Women’s Artistic Gymnastics Provincial squad from Ultimate Gymnastics continued its streak of podium dominance with another strong showing this weekend in Ottawa.

With a trip to the Provincial Championships in Windsor on the line, Ultimate’s athletes responded, posting yet again very solid All-­‐Around qualifying scores, snagging a total of 11 medals over the course of the two-­‐day event, their third and final provincial qualifier of the season, hosted by the Ottawa Gymnastics Centre.

To qualify for the championships, athletes need to rank in the Top 32 of their respective age and level categories, based on averaging the All-­‐Around scores of two of the three required qualifiers during the season. Several of Ultimate’s gymnasts rose to the occasion posting championship-­‐worthy results earning their way to Windsor.

Setting the stage was Julie Bica (Level 6 Age 13) who amassed a phenomenal All-­‐ Around score of 37.45 (out of a possible 40), falling just shy of the Gold Medal, to earn herself the Silver All-­‐Around Medal in her category. Bica, also grabbed Gold Medals on Beam with an amazing 9.775 (out of 10) and on the Floor.

Also doing their part in bringing medals home were Emily Ukrainec (Level 8 Age 11), who also grabbed her fair share of bling. Ukrainec finished 3rd in the All-­‐Around taking the Gold on Vault, Silver on Floor, and Bronze on both Beam and Uneven Bars; Megan Bryson (Level 7 Age 12/13) with a bronze Medal on Vault due to a  strong 9.45 score and an All-­‐Around tally of 36.10; Aimee-­‐Leigh Balec (Level 8 Age 14+) finishing 4th All-­‐Around and bringing home a Bronze Medal on Vault and a dominant 9.35 score on Floor; and Kathleen Varey (Level 8 Age 14+) with 5th Place All-­‐Around and a Bronze Medal on Beam.

Rounding out the weekend with continued strong showings in qualifiers were Daniele Prochnicki (Level 6 Age 13) who finished 8th All-­‐Around with a very solid

36.375 score and taking home 4th Place on Floor with 9.475; and Cassandra Boyer (Level 7 Age 14) who posted another solid championship worthy showing of 36.375 All-­‐Around and grabbing a 6th Place finish on Floor with a very impressive 9.375 score.

Ultimate also currently sees two of its athletes sitting in a position to qualify to compete in the Individual Event Finals, which pits the Top 8 athletes in the province, Ages 14+ and Level 7 and higher) square off in the respective individual events they earned to right to compete in. Cassandra Boyer sits 8th in Level 7 Age 14+ for Beam, and Aimee-­‐Leigh Balec has 8th spot nailed down in Level 8 Age 14+ also for on Beam. Both athletes have worked hard on the season to earn spots in the event finals, a first for the club.
