Weather AlertTHUNDER BAY – Weather conditions across Northwestern Ontario include Snowfall Warnings and Special Weather Statements.

Snowfall warning in effect for:

  • Pickle Lake – Cat Lake
  • Summer Beaver – Wunnummin Lake – Kingfisher Lake
  • Fort Hope – Lansdowne House – Ogoki
  • Webequie
  • Big Trout Lake – Kasabonika

With a strong low tracking northwestward just inland from the Hudson Bay coast, brisk northwesterly winds are pumping in cold arctic air, keeping temperatures near the zero degree mark. As a result snow heavy at times will continue today into tonight. Total snowfall amounts are expected to be in the 15 to 30 cm range by midnight. The snow will diminish in intensity later tonight, with only a few more cm of snow expected on Sunday as the low pressure area lingers just to the northwest of the regions.
In addition, strong northwesterly winds of 30 gusting to 60 km/h are also expected to cause local blowing snow in exposed areas.

Prepare for quickly changing and deteriorating travel conditions. Visibility may be suddenly reduced at times in heavy snow.

Special weather statement in effect for:

  • Armstrong – Auden – Wabakimi Park
  • Beardmore – Jellicoe – Macdiarmid
  • Gull Bay – Black Sturgeon Lake
  • Geraldton – Longlac – Caramat
  • Nakina – Aroland – Pagwa

A significant early season snowfall today.

The regions are near the southern edge of a significant early season snowstorm affecting much of far Northwestern Ontario.

Periods of snow will continue today and tonight, with total amounts of 5 to 10 cm over a large part of the regions and 10 to 15 cm possible by Sunday morning in the Armstrong area near Northern Lake Nipigon.

The snow will taper off to scattered flurries or showers by Sunday as the weather system is forecast to slowly weaken.

Traveling conditions will be difficult due to occasional low visibility in the snow and some accumulation on untreated roads. Motorists should allow for extra time to reach their destination.
