THUNDER BAY – SPORTS – Lakehead’s club baseball team dropped a pair of games to the Minnesota State University Moorhead Dragons on Saturday afternoon.

Game 1: MSU Moorhead 16; Lakehead 4

In the first game, the Dragons jumped all over everything ‘Wolves pitcher James Shaw threw, putting up 3 runs on 4 hits in the first inning, and kept pouring it on, scoring 3 more in the 3rd and 1 in the 4th inning.

Lakehead did respond with some offense of their own with 3 runs in the 3rd inning and another run in the fourth to trail 7-4 heading into the 5th.

2nd baseman Robert Shedden would go 3-4 with an RBI, while brothers Ben and Josh Kennedy had 1 RBI each.

The Moorhead Dragons increased their lead in 5th with 3 runs and wouldn’t look back, tacking on 3 more in each of the last two innings.

“That first game they came out swingin’ the bat, they looked like gangbusters,” said coach Jason Hart.”The pitching wasn’t bad in the first game, we just misplayed a few balls in the outfield, the wind was blowing – I can’t fault the guys, they were hustling out there.”

Game 2: MSU Moorhead 3; Lakehead 2

The second game got underway after a brief recess, with the Dragons putting up 1 run in the top of the first, with Kevin Faber on the mound for Lakehead. Faber pitched a solid game, allowing 3 runs on 4 hits with 4 strike outs.

Faber advanced a baserunner in the 3rd on a balk, followed by a walk, which led to 2 runs being scored. Faber did limit the damage, as he pitched his way out of the inning, ending it on a strike out with the bases loaded.

The ‘Wolves would score a run on a sacrifice fly by Robert Shedden in the 5th to trail 3-2. They threatened to tie the game in the 6th, with Taylor McAskill on 3rd when Brendan Flanagan put a charge into a fastball that was driven deep to centre field, but directly at fielder in position who calmly drifted towards the fence to make the catch on the run.

Coach Hart commented on his starting pitcher “Faber got stronger as he went on, and I like it. We need him. He’s been our ace for the 3rd season now, our go-to guy, so a 3-2 game against a team that was in the NCBA World Series last year, that’s not bad.”
