7:23 PM EDT Saturday 12 July 2014
Severe thunderstorm watch in effect for:

  • Dryden – Vermilion Bay
  • Ignace – English River

Severe thunderstorm conditions possible – early evening to evening.

Showers and thunderstorms have developed along a fast moving cold front. The front is currently located from near Ear Falls on a line southwestward into Manitoba. These thunderstorms may be capable of producing strong wind gusts and dime-sized hail. A wind gust of 89 km/h was reported at Red Lake airport. Warnings may be issued if required.

Large hail can damage property and cause injury. Strong wind gusts can toss loose objects, damage weak buildings, break branches off trees and overturn large vehicles. Remember, severe thunderstorms can produce tornadoes. Be prepared for severe weather. Take cover immediately, if threatening weather approaches. Stay indoors when a thunderstorm strikes. There isn’t a place outside that is safe during a thunderstorm. Stay away from all windows, skylights and doors. In Canada, lightning kills up to 10 people every year. Remember, when thunder roars, go indoors.

Emergency Management Ontario recommends that you take cover immediately, if threatening weather approaches.

Environment Canada meteorologists will update alerts as required, so stay tuned to your local media or Weatheradio. Email reports of severe weather to storm.ontario@ec.gc.ca or tweet with the hashtag #ONStorm.
