THUNDER BAY – BUSINESS – Meghan Mcguire is one of the top five finalists in the Thunder Bay Ventures 2014 Enter the Den Competition. The Enter the Den competition, which is designed to foster entrepreneurship at the high school level in Thunder Bay, has students put forward a business idea, and build it into a business plan.

The top students then compete with each other before a panel of friendly ‘Dragons’.

While the model might be seen as similar to either the CBC program Dragon’s Den or the MSNBC Shark Tank, the real goal here is helping the prospective entrepreneurs. There are few of the local ‘Dragons’ who are as driven as Kevin O’Leary from Dragon’s Den, as the local panel is working to boost more entrepreneurship in the city.

In Community Profiles with Frank Pullia, Meghan Mcguire talks about her business idea, a Dress Rental Business.

Meghan shares how “You don’t want to be an outfit repeater”, and her plans for the finals.

The 2014 Enter the Den finals will be held on Thursday May 22nd at Hammarskjold High School, and streamed live on NetNewsledger.com.

Enter the Den is a business writing plan competition for Thunder Bay high school students inspired by the popular Canadian TV show, the Dragon’s Den. Enter the Den is a gentler version of the format with practical feedback to every participant.

The three cash prizes will go to students with good business ideas that have been well researched, well presented, and well defended. Both written and verbal presentations will be required and we would expect that the winners would follow the format of a business plan in developing their business idea.

This contest offers encouragement and support to all students along the way and a number of resources and supports will be available to assist students wishing to enter the contest, including tips on writing your business plan, loan and grant applications, and marketing do and don’ts.

Students do not have to start the business – the goal is to learn what is involved in starting a business and realizing that starting a business can be a career choice.
