CALGARY – Crime News – Calgary and the University of Calgary are in mourning. Five young people are dead as a result of a mass stabbing that is the worst mass murder in the city’s history.

The Calgary Police Service Homicide Unit responded at approximately 1:20AM MDT to the 100 block of Butler Crescent N.W., for reports of several people injured while attending a house party.

When officers arrived they confirmed three people dead in the house, while two others were taken to hospital. The two people who were transported succumbed to their injuries in hospital. In total, five people are deceased – four men and one woman.

Zackariah Rathwell

Multiple witnesses were transported to the Westwinds Campus and are were interviewed by detectives.

The alleged offender was arrested nearby and remains in custody. Matthew Douglas de Grood, 22, of Calgary, has been charged with five counts of first-degree murder.

The suspect, the son of a high ranking Calgary Police Service officer, has left his family reeling with sadness and sorrow for the families and friends of the victims.

Investigators are asking anyone with information who has yet to speak with police, to contact 403-266-1234.
