Magnus Theatre presents its 42nd main stage season!

Thunder Bay, ON –  The incomparable music and story of BUDDY HOLLY bursts onto the Magnus stage to open Magnus Theatre’s 42nd Season!  The theatre is prepped, primed, and ready to go “to entertain, to engage YOU!” With a very exceptional and eclectic lineup of theatre experiences this is a season not to be missed.  If you have never attended a Magnus Theatre show before, this season is a primetime to treat yourself with a unique experience.  From Magnus’ musical offerings to highly enjoyable comedies and suspenseful dramas, come see for yourself just how entertaining and engaging live theatre can be.
 
This season opens with the rock ‘n roll musical BUDDY: THE BUDDY HOLLY STORY, by Alan Janes. See the legendary young rocker with iconic black-framed glasses who changed music forever. Listen to over 20 of the greatest Buddy Holly classics including “Peggy Sue”, “That’ll Be The Day”, “Oh Boy!”, “Everyday” and “Not Fade Away.” Buddy’s talent and passion for his music provided a vibrant musical legacy that paved the way for generations of rock ‘n rollers to come, influencing and changing popular music forever.
 
Adapted from William Shakespeare’s Macbeth and using characters from Matt Groening’s The Simpsons, MACHOMER by WYRD PRODUCTIONS is a frantic one-man tour-de-force of iambic pentameter, sound bites, slapstick, voice overs and non sequiturs in a vocal spectacular featuring over 50 impressions. A spectacle that is sure to amuse viewers of all ages… MACHOMER will leave you “exhausted with laughter.” This show has toured the world to rave reviews and multiple awards, so get tickets while you can.

The season continues with GREAT EXPECTATIONS, the classic Charles Dickens novel, adapted by Richard Ouzounain. This coming of age story follows the life of a young boy named Pip, who longs to pursue his dreams and rise above his given lot in life. The tale becomes all the more exciting with the addition of a mysterious benefactor who seems to be pulling all the strings. GREAT EXPECTATIONS is sure to enchant audiences with its cast of eccentric characters including Estella, Joe Gargery, and Miss Havisham.
 
The new year at Magnus Theatre starts with NIGHT by Christopher Morris (A Human Cargo/NAC English Theatre Co-Production). NIGHT tells the story of Daniella and Piuyuq in the 24 hour darkness of remote Pond Inlet, Nunavut.  In this engaging English and Inuktitut drama, lives are changed forever when paths cross and cultures clash.
 
Next, see six-time Tony award winner (including Best Play) RED, by John Logan.  Join abstract expressionist painter Mark Rothko in his studio, at the height of his fame in 1958. Questioning fame and artistic integrity, Rothko explores these ideas with his assistant who is from a new generation of artists. The raw emotion depicted by the actors will have you questioning the art around you and asking yourself, “What do you see?”
 
Magnus Theatre wraps up the main stage season with Canadian playwright and Hollywood screenwriter Bernard Slade’s hit SAME TIME, NEXT YEAR. Doris and George meet once a year to share their failures and triumphs in a cozy inn. Twenty-five years of manners and morals are hilariously and touchingly played out in this award winning classic that expertly mixes delicious wit, compassion, humour, and nostalgia.
