THUNDER BAY – Entertainment – Definitely Superior Art Gallery has announced that it has been selected as a finalist for the prestigious Ontario Premier’s Awards For Excellence In The Arts 2013, which recognizes outstanding achievement and contribution to arts and culture in Ontario over a significant period of time.

INVITATION TO AN ARTY PARTY-FRIDAY, JUNE 14 @ 7-10PM

The community is cordially invited to attend a Gala Opening Reception for three new exhibitions, and a 25th Anniversary, Pre-Awards and Supporters Appreciation Party (artists/funders/sponsors/volunteers) at Definitely Superior Art Gallery on Friday June 14th, 7-10pm.

Help us celebrate the recognition of  Definitely Superior Art Gallery’s 25 year history of artistic excellence In Thunder Bay and Northwestern ON, respectively producing/presenting over 800 exhibitions, events, activities and supporting as many as 12,000 multi-disciplinary artists.

Featuring: Over 120 artists, live music from the best of Montreal-[formerly of Thunder Bay]: Adam Waito of Adam & The Amethysts and Super Fossil Power-Tyler Rauman, fire spinning by Dee Marie, exquisite catered refreshments by Retro Bakery and The Sovereign Room. There will be Cake! Champagne … and oh so much more!

Award Information

The Premier’s Awards for Excellence in the Arts is a prestigious award administered by the Ontario Arts Council, now celebrating their 50th anniversary. The award ceremony will take place on Thursday, June 27, 2013 at the Royal Ontario Museum in Toronto.

The award is an acknowledgement of the gallery’s track record of excellence in contemporary arts programming. In its 25 year history, Definitely Superior has presented over 800 exhibitions, events and activities, both on- and off-site, supporting as many as 12,000 multi-disciplinary artists.

Finalists in the arts organization category are:

Authors At Harbourfront Centre – Literature (Toronto)

Blyth Festival – Theatre (Blyth)

Definitely Superior Art Gallery – Visual Arts (Thunder Bay)

Prise de Parole – Book Publishing (Sudbury)

Sketch Working Arts – Arts Education (Toronto)

The Toronto Fringe – Theatre (Toronto)

All of the finalists are excited to see who will win the Premier’s Awards, presented by Michael Chan, the Ontario Minister of Culture, when they attend the award ceremony on June 27th in Toronto. The winning arts organization will be awarded $50,000, the largest monetary award for an arts organization in Canada. The remaining finalists will each receive $2,000. Fingers are crossed … again! 

This is the third time that Definitely Superior has been acknowledged as a finalist; the gallery was also selected in 2010 and 2011.

Finalists are selected by a jury of their peers for this highly competitive award open to all arts disciplines, with a totally new jury selecting the finalists and winners every year, which only increases the significance of being selected as a finalist three times.  

Definitely Superior Art Gallery is also the only arts/cultural organization that has ever been acknowledged as a finalist for this prestigious award from Thunder Bay and all of Northwestern Ontario.
