THUNDER BAY – Sports – The Lakehead Thunderwolves women’s basketball team were defeated on Saturday night, 65-55 by the Wilfrid Laurier Golden Hawks.

Things got off to a much better start for the ‘Wolves on this occasion, getting out to an early lead and keeping the Hawks from getting out in the transition. All told after 20 minutes the ‘Wolves would trail 31- 24.

What the T-Wolves brought on defense they could not transform into results on the offensive end, as they struggled form the field, especially from long range where they finished the game 3-of-20. Conversely, Laurier didn’t rely on the long range game as much, but shot an impressive 5-of-9 from behind the arc.

In the third quarter the Hawks kicked things into gear during a 3-minute run that created an 18-point advantage that would not be relinquished.

Winta Desta (Ottawa, ON) had her best game in the Thunderdome to date, finishing with 16 points and 1 blocked shot in 17 minutes. Ayse Kalkan was next with 11 points and 10 rebounds. Lindsay Inkila had a good night on the glass with 8 rebounds to go with 5 points.

Bree Chaput put up an efficient 17 points, going 8-11 from the field. Laura Doyle scored 12 while Amber Hillis and Kimberley Yeldon had 11 points each.

Thunderwolves Coach’s Comments

Coach Jon Kreiner comments, “We played much tougher and had a much better start today. We had a lot of opportunities in the first quarter but we didn’t capitalize and we also turned the ball right back. Laurier went on 3 runs, the third in the 3rd quarter when we were down 4 and in three minutes down 18. Laurier puts so much pressure on you to do the little things well. They take away your strengths and push you to your weaknesses. Obviously we need to get in the gym and work on some things so that they aren’t hurting us so much.”

The Thunderwolves head to Guelph next weekend for a double header vs the Gryphons.
