NNL HealthbeatTHUNDER BAY – Healthbeat – The Northern Ontario School of Medicine (NOSM) is hosting a Service Learning Symposium entitled Discussing Service Learning Opportunities in Medical Education in Northern Ontario, on May 8, 2012.

NOSM is the first medical school in Canada created with a social accountability mandate. Consistent with this mandate, service learning has been recognized as an important feature in medical education as it involves medical students learning through engagement with community service providers. Through the provision of a service learning pilot project at NOSM in 2011-2012, seven second-year NOSM medical students engaged with community partners to both respond to community identified needs, and learn about their roles as citizens.

Projects included in the pilot project ranged from enhancing the secondary school science curriculum with the Lakehead Public School Board by presenting relevant medical topics and encouraging students from the area to consider a career in medicine, to organizing “Walk with Student Docs” which featured short disease prevention presentations by a guest speaker from the community followed by exercise and interaction.

Participants will have the opportunity to learn from keynote speaker Dr. Barbara Gottlieb MD, as well as hear about the perspectives of NOSM medical students, community service providers, and NOSM representatives, and their experiences in relation to service learning.
