Red Rock Ice Fishing Derby Offers Fun and Challenge

Lake NipigonNIPIGON – The Red Rock Fish and Game Club and Hardcore Fishing, a Nipigon based guiding business, have partnered to create a new fishing derby to take place in Red Rock on March 19th. The event aims to bring 300 fishermen and women out to compete for a wide variety of prizes including a grand prize of $9,999.00 cash.

Organizer Barry Laukkannen is confident about the potential of the new event, “This Ice Fishing Derby has the potential to be the most popular running derby in all of Northwestern Ontario”. Locals expect a lake trout or steelhead to bring in the top weight, as these fish are staging under the ice to make their way up the Nipigon River, but pike and whitefish may also be on the hooks.

March is a slow time for tourism businesses, and community leaders hope that the event will bring some deserved attention to the world class fishing just east of Thunder Bay.

“Obviously we are excited. Creating new events to bring tourists into the Nipigon Red Rock Area is a part of our economic development strategy, so it is encouraging to see a partnership between organizations in our two communities making it a reality,” shares Nipigon Mayor Richard Harvey.
